Presenting to you a simple, yet not so simple free crochet scarf pattern – Puffs on Slalom scarf. It is a simple light weight scarf that can be used as an accessory or simply just to amp up your basic tee to give a polished look.
Naming of the scarf
The name itself speaks a lot about the design. Slalom broadly means moving in zigzag manner and puffs refers to the puff stitch. The scarf has been designed using an interesting combination of basic chevron stitch pattern and puff stitches.
You will also fins my Sanctuary of Shells scarf interesting as it stands true to its name.
Pre-requisites
The pattern is an intermediate level pattern as it uses chevron stitch pattern and puff stitches. It is written in US terminology
Yarn
I used one full cake of Scheepjes whirl in the shade 767 Melting Macaron. Scheepjes whirls are the perfect kind of yarn for scarves having repetitive stitch pattern.

Materials
- Crochet hook 3.5mm. I used Clover Amore as it exceptionally good to hold several stitches at a time.
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers may come handy as well
Gauge
18 dc in 10 rows is 4’’
Finished measurements
The scarf I made is more in the dimension of a stole
75” by 17.5” excluding tassels
Abbreviations
- ch – chain
- st – stitch
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- sp – space
Special stitches
- invt V-st – double crochet two-together where the first leg goes on the next stitch and the second leg goes of the stitch after skipping three stitches
(yarn over, insert hook into the next designated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops) skip 3 stitches and repeat, yarn over and pull through all three loops.
- puff st – puff stitch
(yarn over, insert hook into the designated stitch, yarn over pull up a loop) 4 times, yarn over, pull through 8 loops, yarn over and pull through all the three loops.
- puff st2tog – puff stitch two together
{(yarn over, insert hook into the designated stitch, yarn over pull up a loop) 4 times, yarn over, pull through 8 loops}, sk 3 stitches, repeat {}, yarn over and pull through all three loops together
Note: The puff stitch here is made a little different from the regular puff stitch. Typically, a puff stich is made by pulling through the n number of loops all at once and then chain to lock it. Here, it is made by pulling through all, but one loops and no chaining to lock the stitch. The last ‘yarn over and pull through two loops’ part secures our puff stitch. It also gives a platform to work on the puff stitch without distorting it.
Notes
- ch3 at the beginning of the row counts as one dc
- ch4 at the beginning of the row counts as one dc and ch1
- while working on the row of the puff stitches, take note of the ch1 spaces.
Pattern Instruction

I love the look and feel of puffs… and this is a simple yet lovely design
Thank you
Thank you for the lovely pattern! I have a question: in row 6, the pattern says to do row 2 again. However, the chart not shows 5 dc between the inverted v, not 6 as dictated in the pattern. I assume the chart is incorrect? Thank you!
Hi Colleen, Thanks for spotting it out. I am revamping the pattern and will be available this weekend with corrections incorporated.
