Helena Shawl is a filet crochet rectangle shawl pattern made with Scheepjes whirl. It is an explorative design to take your filet crochet technique to the next level beyond home décor.
Helena Shawl: a tribute through crochet
Helena, in Greek mythology, is worshipped as the goddess of beauty. The name per se means, bright shining light. But this shawl is named after the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, Helena Ravenclaw, the ghost. She plays a pivotal role in the Harry Potter series in deciphering an important plot point and is also one of the unsung heroes. Helena Shawl, the filet crochet rectangle shawl pattern, is my ode through crochet to Helena Ravenclaw for her immense strength to come out.
Construction
Helena Shawl is a filet crochet rectangle shawl pattern, originally designed using Scheepjes whirl. It is started along its, length to grow the width of the shawl.
Once the desired width is attained, the two ends of the shawl are finished with a dangling pompom edging as similar to the Minerva Cardi
The written instructions in the pattern is also supplemented with a filet crochet grid chart. Using this chart, you can alter the dimensions of your projects from a scarf to a throw
Prerequisites
The shawl is designed with filet crochet technique, where every solid block is a 3-dc and open block, dc,ch1,dc. While placing the stitches in the ch1-sp, place them below the chain and not into the chain. Remember to count your ch1 spaces while counting your stitches. To learn the fundamentals of filet crochet technique, read THIS post.

Every row that begins with a double crochet stitch is substituted with a chainless double crochet, to have a clean edge. This will not be mentioned in every row in the instruction and is understood that the first dc is a chainless double crochet stitch.
