Granny Square base tote bag series Crochet-a-Along

Granny square bottom crochet tote pattern

All of us are guilty of using single-use plastic shopping bags that are very harmful for the environment. While most shops have changed to paper bags, most grocery shops have not. Although we try to take our reusable tote bags most of the time, we cannot help it for our impromptu shopping. No more excuses! Now we have, not one, but four crochet market tote bag patterns at our disposal that can be made in a jiffy.

While the environment around us have started healing and recovering during these unfortunate covid lockdowns, let us do our part to help heal the environment better.

Design

Granny square tote bag patterns are an inspiration from the Solid Granny Square Bottom bag designed by Clare Sullivan. You can find her pattern HERE.

The base of each of the bags is a granny square. With constant decrease at the centre of each sides the body of the bag is built. The tote bags are designed almost seamlessly from base to handles.

Despite being designed as a market tote bag, you can very well tailor the size for water-bottle carrier or an over-sized tote.

Market Tote bag pattern series

The crochet market tote bag patterns series contains four granny square base tote bags and an additional bonus produce bag. Each of the patterns will be release on the blog on a weekly basis. Yes, you read that right. All of the tote patterns are going to be free patterns available on the blog.

Every pattern is different from the other, other than the obvious fact that the base of the tote is a granny square. You can make as many as you would like as per your liking, as they make quick crochet gifts for your near and dear ones.

What you will need?

For my project, I used 100% cotton sport weight yarn from my local yarn shop, Yarnholic and Drops Safron from Just Yarn It. You can use any sport weight cotton yarn of your choice. Each of the tote requires about 350 m – 600 m of yarn. Four crochet hooks – 3mm, 3.25mm, 3.5mm and 3.75mm, are used depending on the design. You can very well alter the size of the totes and the yarn requirement varies accordingly.

Since gauge is not crucial for this pattern, you can use any yarn with a crochet hook one size up or down the corresponding hook size, depending on the pattern. I would recommend using a pure cotton yarn for this pattern.

Pattern level

Of the four market tote bags two of them are designed with simple and straight-forward stitches and the other two are of intermediate level stitches. The produce bag is of basic pattern level.
