Karivembu Tote: An everyday crochet tote bag pattern inspired by the curry leaves

Have you ever had a spicy inspiration? Or have you made any crochet projects inspired by unusual objects? This is the story of a crochet tote bag pattern inspired from one of the spices of India.

It’s a Collab

Karivembu means Curry leaves in Tamil, a leafy spice used in Indian cuisine. This crochet tote bag pattern is designed for the 4th edition of Indian Designers’ Collaboration, Spices of India

Do check out their Instagram page for more amazing work they are doing.

Inspiration for the pattern: A backstory

When I was approached to design for the Spices of India edition, I was given two choices of spices. I took my time to decide if I want to design for the tote. But my heart instantly knew my spice of inspiration is the Curry leaf if I am going to take part. And here I am, with a crochet tote pattern designed by the inspiration of the curry leaves.

Construction of the Karivembu tote bag pattern

The tote is designed with a solid base and band, colors of which are inspired by the curry leaf rice (more on that later).

The body of the tote has leaf patterns, imagined as the curry leaves are dispersed on a plate over the rice.

The handles of the tote are made seamlessly from the band, with an easy icord-like construction near the holding spot.

Though the tote bag has been designed using two colors, it easily can be made using a single color seamlessly.

We have a recipe too!

As a part of the collaboration, I was also asked to give a recipe using the spice of choice. Therefore, I decided to give my spice, the respect it deserves and made Curry leaves the main ingredient of the recipe.

You can find my recipe and the cooking tutorial on the InDesCo Instagram page. Click HERE to view the Reel.

1. Filet Crochet

Filet Crochet, arguably, is one of the most easiest crochet techniques. This techniques forms figures with blocks created by double or treble crochet stitches and meshes formed by the chain spaces.

By using basic of the stitches, you can create marvels in your crochet project. With a little bit of math logic and lots of creativity, you can turn any picture into a filet crochet project.

3. Embossed Crochet technique

Embossed crochet is a crochet technique where you make patterns that are elevated from the crochet level. This is achieved by placed your crochet stitches in the front/back post of your existing crochet stitches.

You can make embossed crochet projects using single or multiple colours and the effect in both cases are equally stunning. Natalia Kononova from Outstanding Crochet has some stunning embossed crochet bag patterns. Meadow Bag set is one precious pattern among them.

3. Mosaic Crochet

Mosaic crochet is a crochet technique that uses two colours to bring out geometrical effect. The finished object resembles a tiled floor  that has beautiful geometrical patterns.

As intimidating as the pattern seems, it is one of the very easiest crochet techniques that used only basic crochet stitches.

If you are completely new to mosaic crochet, Nya infinity blanket by Lilla Bjorn is the best place to start. It’s a free crochet pattern available in her website.

4. Tapestry Crochet

Tapestry crochet technique, like filet crochet, forms different figures in the project. It also uses basic crochet stitches, mostly single crochet, working the stitches either in back-loop only or both loops. Two or more colours are used in tapestry crochet projects and yarn is carried along with the stiches being worked and changed only when the figures shapes are bring made. In contract to filet crochet, the fabric created here is a solid one.

Once again, Lilla Bjorn crochet has step-by-step instructions on how to do Tapestry Crochet along with a free crochet pattern in her website. Do check it out if you would like to experience this crochet technique. Here is a beginner’s guide for Tapestry Crochet

5. Fair Isle Crochet

Fair Isle crochet is quite similar to Tapestry crochet, except that you do not carry your contrasting colored yarn up until the colour change. Meaning, the contrasting colored yarn will be visible in the wrong side of your work and therefore the technique can be used only when crocheting in the rounds.

Here are some useful resources on Fair Isle Crochet guide and step-by-step instructions to understand Fair Isle Crochet.

6. Overlay Crochet Technique

Overlay Crochet is a very artistic crochet technique. It creates a stained glass effect in it’s finished objects. This is achieved by using two or more colours of yarns and placing stitches in the posts and/or various loops. Maintaining uniform tension in stitches is of utmost importance in this crochet technique

Lilla Bjorn crochet has some amazing Overlay Crochet Patterns and one of the simplest pattern that used this technique is Huldra Sweater. I made one for myself as a half-sleeved tee using Scheepjes whirl and whirlette.

7. Brioche Crochet

Brioche, originally from knitting, is quite new in the crochet scenario. Technique-wise, it is completely different from knitting. But the effect of the finished object is similar to that of a knit one.

Brioche crochet is essentially a rib-like structure formed by working with two colours of yarn. The fabric created as a result is quite thick, as it essentially has two layers.

Are filet crochet patterns meant only for home decors?

Have you crocheted a filet crochet pattern before? When you search for filet crochet patterns, do you find innovative contemporary designs other than age-old table runners and napkins? Are filet crochet patterns meant only for home décor pieces? In this post you will find all your answers!

What is filet crochet?

Filet crochet is an ancient needle art of making fabric with solid designs against a mesh background. Most filet crochet designs use only the basic stitches like double crochet and chains to form the pattern. Designing starts form a grid chart, where the desired pattern is first pictured for it to be translated into stitches.

Is it that intricate?

Though it looks intricate, filet crochet patterns are among the easiest diagrams to follow and can produce simply stunning results.

To learn the fundamentals of filet crochet, I would highly recommend the eBook, ‘You can Filet Crochet too!’.

Filet crochet is not only the easiest of all the crochet techniques but also the most underutilized of all the other crochet techniques. When using the right kind if yarn, filet crochet patterns create the lightest weight fabric, suitable for wearables in the tropical region.

Filet crochet patterns: stretching its potential

Filet crochet beyond home décor is my humble attempt to stretch the potential of filet crochet technique to make beautiful garments and accessories.

This is an eBook containing 5 exclusive filet crochet patterns, that are not table runners or other home décor pieces. The filet crochet patterns are as follows.

  1. Pomona tote: A multifunctional lacy tote pattern with the solid base and band and lacy body
  2. Minerva Cardi: Seamlessly crocheted kimono inspired cardigan that needs NO sewing
  3. Sybil Headband: Headband pattern crocheted end-to-end from one tie to another
  4. Arabella Pouch: Small multi-purpose pouch with a solid base and band and lacy body
  5. Helena Shawl: Shawl crocheted along its length with repetitive patterns

Let’s talk yarn

Filet crochet produces its best result when a thins cotton yarn is used for its design. Therefore, fingering weight or light fingering weight yarn is used for all designs. It is always best to stay away from fuzzy yarn while making filet crochet patterns.

All the 5 filet crochet patterns use cotton or cotton-blend yarn depending on the type of the items. For instance, the tote and pouch require sturdiness and yarn that does not stretch much. Therefore a 100% cotton yarn was used. For cardigan and shawl a cotton blend yarn was used because the final product needed to be light as well.

Prerequisite knowledge

All patterns designed with filet crochet technique, where every solid block is a 3-dc and open block, dc,ch1,dc. While placing the stitches in the ch1-sp, place them below the chain and not into the chain. To learn the fundamentals of filet crochet technique, read THIS post.

Every row begins with a chainless double crochet, to have a clean edge. This will not be mentioned in every row in the instruction and is understood that the first dc is a chainless double crochet stitch. For Pomona tote and Arabella Pouch, every row is ended by joining to the first stitch using slip stitch.

An ode through crochet

This is totally on a side note, but very close to my heart. Filet crochet beyond home décor is my ode through crochet to the unsung female characters in the Happy Potter wizarding world. If you have not noticed yet, all the five filet crochet patterns in named after one of the female characters that played a vital role and deserves more spotlight. This is the Potterhead in me coming out to pay my tribute!

Is that all?

Filet crochet beyond home décor is a continuous venture, where the eBook is going to be updated with new filet crochet patterns as they are released. As of now, there are two more designs in the pipeline, one being the Luna Poncho.

But one thing is for sure, if you get this eBook now, you are going to get new patterns without additional cost of course!
